Good Food @ Outskirts of Ipoh, Perak

Breathtaking lake scenery taken at Pusing

切 卷 (sliced meat roll) - so far only can get in Pusing town. We haven't come across it in other states

Curry pork-skin chu cheong fun @ pusing ~good~

Mushroom gravy chu cheong fun ~good~

The "short-tempered" chu cheong fun uncle

Tried it and you will love it! It's at the Pusing town, opposite the only police station in town. Pusing is located in Batu Gajah district of Perak. It's about 30 minutes aways from Ipoh town. This is also my hubby's hometown. I bet a lot of people have not hear about this Pusing town. I'm one of them too before I know my hubby. It is a small town with mostly Chinese and Indian population here. Most of the people here do farming and small business. It's consider a Hakka village as well but my in-laws are Cantonese living here since childhood. This chu cheong fan stalls has opened since many many years ago, > 20 yrs. There are only two choices of chu cheong fan here. One is with mushroom gravy and the other one is with curry gravy. I like both but most people prefer the curry gravy one. My hubby can eat up to 3 plates on just chu cheong fan..hehe.. Besides chu cheong fan, Pusing is also famous for its Hakka & nyonya kuih, Chiet kuen (cut meat rolls), dao ma chiet (like pan mee but using knife to cut the noodles), curry wildbor meat with noodles, and etc.

The following food is found at Chemor town (@Restoran Hoong Wan) - Great Seafood noodles! with it's famous fish meaty 'slices'

Food @ Jalan Bahagia Kelana Jaya (behind UTAR Kelana Jaya)

All these food can be found in the chinese coffeeshop behind UTAR Kelana Jaya (beside GIANT Kelana Jaya) or beside the Kelana Jaya Sentral Apartment. I'm sorry I forgot to capture the name of the coffeeshop but don't worry as you will see the coffeeshop on your right once you turn into Jalan Bahagia from LDP :) [Anyway, I'll try to get the name]. When we come and stay in my sister-in-law's place, we always have our breakfast here, and the steam soup is a must for every breakfast! 8tv Ho-jiak team also tried before the soup! At night, there is also a thai chu-char here. Most of the food here are sold at RM4 per bowl/plate.

Wantan noodles with big 3 sui kows (shrimp dumpling) - price is reasonable ok (RM5 including the sui kows) and overall taste was quite nice with just a little bit oily... :-)

Sarawak hand noodles
Fish ball meehoon soup with bitter gourd - quite nice, somehow the combination is quite refreshing and good.

Koay teow meehoon soup - it tasted a bit like clear prawn noodles soup based somehow. Later I found out the stall also selling prawn noodles (hokkien mee)

Here comes the soup. Besides soup, this stall also sells steams rices.

Steamed old cucumber soup - good!
Steamed water crest soup - good!
fried rice with an egg. There is a fried rice and noodles stall just beside the sarawak hand noodles stall.

Yuo Char Koay/YouTiao @ 1Utama

Bringing local streets snack to shopping mall....quite a good idea....This restaurant booth is at 1Utama (new wing if not mistaken...hehe). The streets snack here is nice. It served soya milk, you-char-koay, sesame rice balls, porridge & ham-chim-peng. It's quite a cheap tea-break...this is halal too. When I dined in with my husband, the only missing part is the soya milk+youtiao songs by JJ 林俊傑-豆漿油條. If not, it will be sweet sweet.....hehe :D

Long queue.....but the lines moved reasonably fast...hehe :)

Me with the soya-dipped you-char-koay....hehe....nice...ahhh....haha...looks very tam-chiak

Besides you char koay, they also have sesame rice balls which come in 3 flavors (peanut, redbean & lotus paste) and ham-chim-peng

The soya is nice and creamy...

Taiping Lang Restaurant (Puchong)

Recently when I was in KL, my sister treated me to this restaurant called Taiping Lang ('Lang' aka People). This restaurant was also recommended by Axian (in Astro AEC Taste with Jason) last year March. This is my sister's 2nd time to the restaurant. The restaurant is located in Puchong, opposite IOI Mall. It served home-cooked nyonya food with its specialties on grandma's cooking. The restaurant is quite nostalgia with the ah ma's stuff hanging on the wall. I found that the food is at an average taste only with a lot of MSG..... :(

My sister also has the same comment. She said the taste has deteriorated since last year when she first tried out. After the lunch, no matter how many litre of water that went down my throat, it still did not quench my thirst.... :( Dishes here were in small portion and a bit pricy (food shown cost >RM70++)

Christmas in Kuala Lumpur

Last week we went to KL to be 'fantasized' by all the Christmas trees, lighting and mood. Somehow I always like Christmas more than Chinese New Year, with songs (that I find peace in) and all the beautiful decorated x'mas trees and lights.... I just simply love it.... :D...

At Starhill, one of my husband's wishes came true. As a watch-lover, he wish to go for a watch exhibition and it happened that we bumped into one on that day. It was held by YTL. He was fascinated about all the watches there especially brands like Breguet, AP, JLC, Maurice Lacroix, and many mores :D

Tips before cooking daylily (golden needle flower)

The daylily (金针花)or golden needle flower is widely available especially in cameron highlands market. Normally it comes in packets. One packet can average from RM1.70 - RM3. As you can see from photos above, you should snap out the inner core which is white in color. This is actually the stem of the flower before it bloom. This is told by the farmers & vege sellers. Those who has weak digestion might get diarrhoea if the core is not removed prior cooking. It's pretty easy to remove the core, just bend the 'head' and let it snap a little then pull it out, like the photo above. Anyway, this is a great vege dish :)

Purple Chili Padi

Seen a purple-coloured chilli padi before? Here is it. This is my first time seeing them. Found this in my neighbour's farm :-). This neighbour plant a lot of chili padi as he said his family can't live without chilies. I love chili padi too but not to the extreme that I can't live without it...hehe...
Met up with the neighbour yesterday evening when we were taking our dog for walk. He said this little purple thingy here is much more hotter and spicier than the green ones....hmm...forgot to ask one from him to try....

TAR CHANG JIN Korean Restaurant @ Autoworld Juru

Last week I tried out this korean restaurant with my hubby and sister. This restaurant is located at AutoWorld Juru Penang. All of us find the food here nice and good. The prices here are quite reasonable as well. Even though we didn't order the BBQ dishes but from the menu you beef BBQ cost < RM30, which I think it's quite reasonable.

Kimchi hot pot (2-3 persons serving)

Famous korean fried rice cake

Fried glass noodles korean styles- even though it looks like some normal fried glass noodles but it tastes different and it's good. It's the sesame sauce they used!

1st Attempt on making Loh Bak (5 spice meat roll)

At first I was worried that it does not turn out well....but I was very happy and delighted...It looks good and taste good and ok :D....but need some improvement per my hubby's feedback that I need to add a little bit more of the 5 spices powder and maybe adding some water chestnut to include some crunchiness in it....I tried two types of wrapping.....one with 'ekor' and one without...hehe...but I like the one with 'ekor' one....like to bite the crunchiness of the 'tail'...hehe.... Just finished wrapping....before drowning 'them' into the hot bubling oil....

Here's the recipe:

1 pieces bean curd sheets (cut into 6″ x 8″ rectangles) **[just cut according to the pre-folded bean curd sheets after you get from the market]**
500g lean pork (cut into strips)
300g water chestnuts (skinned and chopped finely) - optional but this will give you the crunchiness
1 onion (finely chopped)
2 cloves garlic (finely chopped)
1 stalk chinese parsley (optional - finely chopped)
1 cucumber(optional)

Seasoning:
2tbsp of soya sauce
2 1/2 tsp five-spice powder
1 egg (lightly beaten)
2 tbsp tapioca flour
1 dash of white pepper powder

Method:
Combine the seasonings and add in lean pork strips and marinate the pork for at least 2hrs.
Chop the water chestnuts and combine with the marinated pork, add garlic, onion, chinese parsley and mix well.
Lay one sheet of pre-cut bean curd skin on a flat surface. Light dab it with some water to soften it. Spoon the mixture onto the sheet, fold in the two sides and roll up tightly. Alternatively, just fold/roll tightly and at the finishing fold, lightly press at both end of the meat to make the meat to compact in the middle. Seal the edges with the marinate juice.
Heat up your wok, pour in 2 cups of cooking oil and deep-fry the meat rolls over medium heat until golden brown.
Drain on paper towels. Serve with sliced cucumber and chili sauce
